Service Description

JONI MITCHELL was first known for her iconic 1966 folk anthem “Both Sides Now,” which has been recorded by more than 1,700 artists. But the finest jazz musicians in the world have lined up to work with 11-time Grammy winner, as well. Luminaries Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, Lee Ritenour, Wayne Shorter, Larry Carlton and many more have all been thrilled to record and perform with her. For Joni, a career highlight was when Charles Mingus asked her to write lyrics for his compositions and record them together. Her fans may not be aware that heir beloved Joni songs are all from jazz albums! In 2015, Joni suffered a brain aneurysm, which left her unable to walk, talk, sing, or play guitar. Hearing her referred to as “folk singer Joni Mitchell” in news announcements inspired Leslie Ballard, a longtime Joni devotee, to act to correct this misrepresentation. Together with a group of gifted fellow Joni followers, she formed Joni Mitchell’s Jazz Tribute, playing to a sold-out audience from their very first performance. During her 30 years in New York City, Leslie regularly performed with a wide range of musical styles, including the Amato Opera, the Jerriese Johnson Gospel Choir, the Wexford Gaelic Trio, as well as singing backup vocals on albums and karaoke tracks. For this occasion, Leslie, lead vocals and flute has brought together a group of top-flight musicians to recreate some of Joni’s most beloved songs, as recorded on her most popular albums.
